Hope for Hailey is a community-driven initiative supporting a young girl born with a rare condition, cloacal exstrophy. As she prepared for a series of major surgeries, her request was simple: decorate her hospital room with first responder patches—something deeply personal given her parents’ roles as a firefighter and paramedic.

What began as a small request quickly grew into a global show of support. First responders from around the world sent patches to encourage Hailey, eventually totaling more than 2,000 patches.

This project focused on designing a patch of her own—one that would represent her identity, strength, and story.

The design intentionally incorporates symbolism tied to rare disease awareness, reinforcing both personal identity and broader community meaning.

The Story

Hailey’s connection to first responder patches wasn’t just visual—it was deeply personal. They represented family, bravery, and familiarity during an uncertain and difficult time. As her story spread across social media and news outlets, first responders from around the world began sending patches to support her. What started as a few patches quickly grew into thousands.

Amid this overwhelming display of support, her parents wanted something uniquely hers—a patch designed specifically for Hailey that would represent her personality, her strength, and her journey.

This wasn’t just a design exercise—it was about translating emotion, identity, and resilience into a tangible symbol.

The Challenge

The goal was to design a patch that felt authentic within first responder culture while capturing Hailey’s personality and message of resilience. It also needed to work effectively as an embroidered patch and translate well across both physical and digital uses. The final design had to feel at home among real first responder patches while still being uniquely hers.

Authentic Patch Structure

The design uses a firefighter-style Maltese cross shield, grounding the patch visually within first responder culture.

The zebra pattern represents the global symbol for rare diseases.

Hailey’s motto, “I can do hard things,” reinforces the emotional message of strength and perseverance.

Colors

The color palette was chosen to reflect Hailey’s personality while maintaining strong contrast and clarity for embroidery. Pink—her favorite color—became the dominant visual theme, supported by darker tones that help anchor the design and improve legibility when stitched. Black and white were used not only for contrast but also to support the zebra pattern symbolism tied to rare disease awareness.

Zebra Pattern

The zebra pattern is incorporated directly into Hailey’s name, making it the visual focal point of the patch.

This design choice carries deeper meaning: the zebra pattern is widely recognized as a symbol for rare disease awareness. The symbol originates from a medical teaching phrase: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses—but sometimes it’s a zebra.” It represents the idea that rare conditions are often overlooked because they are uncommon.

By embedding the zebra pattern into the typography, the design connects Hailey’s identity directly to the broader rare disease community.

Typefaces

Typography was designed with both symbolism and production in mind. Because embroidered patches can lose clarity with thin lines or intricate details, the lettering uses thicker strokes and simplified forms to ensure durability and readability.

The main title, “Hope for Hailey,” anchors the design, while the motto “I can do hard things” is placed within a banner below. This banner structure mirrors traditional first responder patch layouts, reinforcing visual hierarchy and cultural authenticity.

Spacing and stroke weight were carefully considered so the lettering would remain clear when translated into stitched thread.

Structure

The patch is built around a Maltese cross framework, a shape strongly associated with firefighter insignia and emergency services.

Using this structure allowed the patch to feel immediately familiar within the world of first responders. It mirrors the visual language commonly seen on fire department patches, helping the design feel authentic alongside the thousands of patches Hailey received.

At the same time, the structure provides a strong foundation for organizing the design elements—name, motto, symbolism, and color—into a cohesive composition.

Designing for Embroidery

Although there were no strict production limitations, the design was created with embroidery in mind from the start. Drawing on prior experience with in-house embroidery production, thin strokes and overly detailed elements were avoided to prevent stitching issues, while lettering and shapes were kept bold and well-spaced to ensure clarity in the final embroidered patch.

The Result

What began as a simple request quickly became a global show of support. Hailey ultimately received over 2,000 patches from first responders around the world, creating a powerful reminder that she had an entire community behind her.

The custom Hope for Hailey patch was produced in a run of roughly 450 embroidered patches, which were shared with family, friends, and supporters. The design also became a recognizable symbol for the initiative, appearing on fundraising merchandise such as shirts and stickers, as well as across social media and awareness efforts connected to Hailey’s story.

More than anything, the patch became something uniquely hers—standing among the thousands she received while carrying a message of strength and encouragement during a difficult chapter in her life.
